This year’s All Access Golf Travel and Events group trip was one for the books, taking us to the rugged and breathtaking region of Donegal, Ireland. Our journey was a perfect blend of world-class golf, stunning scenery, and authentic Irish hospitality. Over the course of a week, we played some of the most revered courses in Ireland, including Rosapenna’s St. Patrick’s Links, Narin & Portnoo, Cruit Island, Portsalon, and Ballyliffin. Each course offered unique challenges and unforgettable moments, and the charming town of Rosapenna and Downings became our home away from home.
Our adventure kicked off at the Rosapenna Resort, where we tackled the St. Patrick’s Links, a course that has quickly risen to fame since its redesign by Tom Doak. As we teed off on the first hole, the anticipation was palpable. The course is a true links experience, characterized by its natural dunes, fast fairways, and tricky bunkers. The Atlantic Ocean provided a stunning backdrop, but also reminded us of the ever-present wind, which added an extra layer of challenge to our rounds.
For many in the group, the 14th hole became a highlight – a par-5 that demands both length and accuracy. Watching each member of the group strategize their approach shots, battling the wind while trying to avoid the treacherous bunkers, was a testament to the course’s ability to test every aspect of our game. St. Patrick’s Links was a fitting start to our trip, setting the tone for the incredible golf that lay ahead.
Our next stop was Narin & Portnoo, a course that many in the group had heard whispers about, but few had played. Nestled along the Wild Atlantic Way, this course offered a quieter, more intimate golfing experience. The front nine lulled us into a false sense of security with its breathtaking views and relatively straightforward holes. But as we made the turn, the course’s true character emerged.
The 16th hole, a par-3 perched on the edge of a cliff, became the talk of the day. With the ocean crashing below and the wind whipping off the Atlantic, this hole tested not just our skills but our nerves. Watching our group navigate this stunning yet demanding hole was a highlight, and by the time we finished our round, we all agreed that Narin & Portnoo was a course we’d never forget.
Cruit Island was an experience unlike any other. As we arrived, the rugged beauty of the course was immediately apparent. With only nine holes, this course is often overlooked, but it quickly became a favorite among our group. The natural landscape, with its rocky outcrops and panoramic ocean views, made every hole a postcard-worthy scene.
The 6th hole, a par-3 over a rocky inlet, was a standout. The challenge of hitting the green while battling the gusts of wind off the ocean was exhilarating. Our group relished the opportunity to play a course that felt so raw and untouched. The lack of pretension at Cruit Island only added to its charm – it was just us, our clubs, and the wild Irish landscape.
Portsalon offered us a step back in time with its classic links layout. Established in 1891, this course is steeped in history and tradition. As we played along the shores of Ballymastocker Bay, consistently rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the group couldn’t help but pause to take in the stunning scenery.
The 2nd hole, a par-4 running parallel to the beach, was a favorite. The wide fairway invited us to let loose with our drives, but the small, well-protected green required a delicate touch. As we gathered on the green, discussing our strategies and the challenges of links golf, it was clear that Portsalon had left a lasting impression on all of us.
Our final golf stop was Ballyliffin, home to two of Ireland’s finest links courses – the Old Links and Glashedy Links. The excitement was palpable as we arrived, knowing we were about to play on some of the most revered turf in the country. The Old Links, with its traditional layout and undulating fairways, was a pure test of our links skills. Meanwhile, Glashedy Links, with its modern design and larger greens, provided a slightly different challenge but was no less demanding.
Both courses offered us a mix of strategic thinking and shot-making, with the unpredictable Donegal weather adding an extra layer of difficulty. As we gathered for a group photo on the final green, it was clear that Ballyliffin had lived up to its reputation. The memories we made on these courses would be cherished for years to come.
Throughout our trip, the town of Rosapenna and Downings became our home base. The warmth and hospitality of the locals made us feel like part of the community. After our rounds, we often found ourselves at the Harbour Bar, a local gem where the atmosphere was as inviting as the pints of Guinness.
The Harbour Bar became our go-to spot for unwinding after a day on the links. With its cozy interior, friendly patrons, and traditional Irish music, it was the perfect place to share stories of our day’s adventures. Whether we were discussing our best shots, laughing about our misses, or simply soaking in the local culture, the Harbour Bar was where our group truly bonded.
As we wrapped up our week in Donegal, there was a sense of camaraderie and shared accomplishment among our group. We had tackled some of the most challenging and beautiful courses in Ireland, experienced the best of Irish hospitality, and created memories that would last a lifetime. Each course we played offered something unique, and the town of Rosapenna and Downings provided the perfect backdrop for our adventure.
For anyone considering a golf trip to Ireland, Donegal should be at the top of your list. The combination of world-class courses, stunning scenery, and the warm welcome you’ll receive makes it a destination that every golfer should experience.
